E Shram Portal for Unorganised Workers in India

The e Shram portal was launched by the government of India on 26 August 2021. The Ministry of Labour and Employment is the authority that regulates the affairs of labours and workers. 

It is the first platform which maintains the database of unorganized workers. The language of the portal is both Hindi and English.

What Do You Mean by E Shram Portal?

E-Shram Portal means the website for labours and workers. The term Shram is taken from Hindi vocabulary. It means a labour workforce. The government of India designed the website, especially for the worker of the unorganised sector of the country.

The main aim of the Bharat Sarkar, behind the launching of the electronic Window is detailed out below in points.

  • The problem that we faced earlier, is that we do not have data on the persons working in the unorganized sector. Therefore, to generate the centralized data this electronic window is created. There is various category of people which fall under this head such as – domestic workers, construction workers, gig and platform workers, vendors working in the streets, the agriculture labour force and many others.
  • The e shram portal will provide the central and state government with comprehensive data that can help us in the time of national Crises.
  • To provide the benefits of government schemes to the worker under unorganized sectors. It can help them to get social security.
  • When you have the database of the people working in the unorganized sectors, you can use it and share it with the other authorities.
  • The problem we have faced in the past is that the benefits of welfare Schemes are not delivered to the unorganized sector worker, therefore to help them out you need to know the number of people working in the unorganized sector and under what category they fall.

What does to mean by the term unorganized sector in India?

In India, the unorganized sector comprises almost 92 per cent of the total population. This sector is very critical from the perspective of the economic growth of the country.

Section 2(m)of the Unorganized Workers Social Security Act 2008 defines the phrase as a home-based worker, self-employed worker or wageworkers.

These are workers who do not get the benefits of e Shram portal scheme like pensions, maternity leaves, provident funds, gratuities etc. These employees are often paid based on daily or hourly work.

This sector is the one where rules and regulations framed by the government concerning employment are not followed.

The major classification of unorganised sector is made out like-

  • Occupation-based -  In this category people carrying out the occupation in the form of - marginal farmers, landless agriculture labour class, fishermen, persons involved in packaging and labelling, construction work, leather industry, weavers, artisans, works in brick, kilns and other are included.
  • Employment-based – Manual agricultural workers, contracted-based workers, migrant workers and other informal workers.
  • Troubled Category – Scavengers, toddy tappers, loaders and unloaders, carries of top loaders etc. are included in this category.
  • Service Category – domestic help, midwives, barbers, vegetable and fruit sellers, and newspaper sellers are included here.

How to register under E-Shram Portal?

Any person who is working in the unorganized sector can get registration under the E- Shram portal. While obtaining the registration under the E Shram portal you have to satisfy some of the conditions, which are listed below –

  • The person has to be between 16 to 59 years of age.
  • The worker must not be a member of the government Schemes –

1. Employees Provident Fund

2. Employee’s State Insurance

3. National Pension Scheme

The worker must not be the payer of Income Tax.

The document needed for e shram registration are –

  • Aadhar number
  • The mobile number should be linked with the Aadhar
  • Saving account number with IFSC code

If the unorganised worker, does not have his/her number linked with the Aadhar then, in such case they need to visit the CSC and get themselves registered through biometric authentication.

The worker who gets his registration done under the E Shram Portal will be allotted 12 digital unique numbers.

  • The accidental insurance cover under the scheme of Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana is worth Rs two Lakhs.

How to get yourself registered for the E- Shram card under the E Shram Portal?

The card will be issued to the person who got his/her registration done under the portal. On the e shram card the 12-digit number is marked, this number is popularly known as the UAN number.

The extended meaning thereof is the universal Account number. This number will be uniquely assigned to every person who had registered himself under the E Shram portal.  This number will be permanent, which means once assigned, it will remain unchanged for the worker throughout the lifetime.

  • You have to visit the official website, which is eshram.gov .in
  • Then go have to click on the Register on e Shram portal link provide there, on the right-hand side of the page.
  • At the self-registration page enter the Aadhar-linked mobile number and the Captcha.
  • Then, you have to click on the send OTP option
  • After entering the OTP, the application form will get open
  • Enter the personal and educational details there
  • Then you need to choose the option preview self-declaration.
  • Enter all your required credentials such as email id and other descriptions asked there
  • After completing the application form, you have to set a memorable password.
  • Then, you have to click on the login make the link for e Shram portal registration
  • Full fill the description which is required
  • Upload the document, that is asked for

E Shram, card Self Registration process, let’s learn it.

  • First visit the website officially made for, registration of the E Shram Card.
  • When you reach the homepage you will be given the options, if have got your registration done then hit the button.
  • On hinting the button, you will get the option to update your profile.
  • Then, you have to put your Aadhar-linked mobile number
  • OTP will be sent to your mobile number, after entering the OTP and Captcha code.
  • After the verification, your profile will get opened
  • Now you can update, your shram card profile
  • After updating, you have to submit the card.
